It is with great regret that the Club has learnt of the death of one of its former members and Chairman Ronnie Blackett. Ronnie was a Club committee member for a number of years and became Chairman in the early 1990’s. He worked very closely with the Club treasurer David Brown and between them they created the Tartan Games which still continues to this day. Some of the older members of the Club will remember Ronnie being responsible for a number of light-hearted events including the Beamish Museum Relays (where the runners dressed in 1920’s kit), the round Britain Relay and the Newcastle to Derwentwater triathlon Relay….wherever Ronnie was there was fun.
Ronnie and his wife Marian were regularly involved in charity work. They organised many events in particular to raise funds for arthritis charities.
Ronnie’s funeral will take place on Tuesday 20th February at 09:45 at the West Road Crematorium and afterwards at Westerhope Golf Club. The Clubs condolences go to Ronnie’s wife Marian, daughter Andrea, grandson Hayden and son in law Gareth.
