Saturday started badly for many Gateshead athletes due to a crash on the A1 that forced several athletes to abandon their journey to Leigh and miss the competition. However those that made it on Saturday and Sunday found that the hot sunny weather was made for good performances.
Gold medal performances for Joy Eze in the 100m, Philippa Ellis in the 100m Hurdles, Mia Liddell in the 400m Hurdles, Sophie Littlemore and Joe Martin in the Discus and Harry Maslen in the 110m Hurdles led the field. Followed up by Silver medals for Jazmine Moss in the 200m and Harry Maslen in the Long Jump and Bronze medals for Ben Schofield in the 400m Hurdles and Beth Pringle in the 200m.
Other performances just missing out on medals were Dan Walsh and Susan Folorunso who were 4th in their respective age groups in the sprints. Justin Cooper was 4th in the SM 400m, with Mark Collier pulling up injured in the final after running a good qualifying heat. Another just missing out on her 2nd medal was Philippa Ellis finishing 4th in the SP.
Oliver Lewis and Josh McKeown were 5th in their finals in the 400m Hurdles and 200m respectively and Rachael Bennett 6th in the U20W 200m final.
Ben Webster was 8th in the final of the U20M Javelin and Reuben Cole and Matthew Williamson just missed out on progressing through to the finals of the 400m and 100m sprints.
Well done to all who took part and commiserations to those who had to turn back on Saturday.
