Sixteen of our young athletes ran in Birtley AC’s cross country relays on 11 March at Lord Lawson of Beamish School.

We had two very inexperienced teams of mostly 8 and 9 year olds in the under 11s. The boys (Bailey McDonald Crooks, Harry Hunter, and Alfie Cooke) finished in a creditable 5th position. The girls (Holly Asquith, Skye Marshall and Grace Gordon), with one previous race between them, also did well to finish 17th.

In the under 13s:

  • the girls team of Freja Bell, Jessica Ord and Anya Crowder all ran strongly to finish 5th
  • the team of Oliver Ezeoke, Ben Asquith and Theo Barron were in contention from the start with Theo storming through to secure first position on the final leg.
  • Sonny Lewins, Lewis Harmieson and William Wells, all in their first under 13 race, were not far behind in 6th place.

A special mention goes to Aoife Bell who agreed to make up a composite team with Sunderland Harriers. It was also her first under 13 race and she showed that she can more than hold her own in that age group.

Well done to all our athletes, particularly those competing for the first time. Thanks to Birtley AC for organizing this increasingly popular event.
