First off it was the Scottish Championships where Finlay Wilkinson won Gold in the U15 boys 80m Hurdles. Oliver Lewis and Georgina Mabbott both just missed out on medals placing 4th in the 400m Hurdles and 75m Hurdles respectively, Georgina also placed 9th in the U15 Girls Long Jump. Evie Harrison was 5th in the final of the U15 girls 200m and Joes Brown-King reached the semi-final of the U15 boys 100m. Emily Stewart got gold in her 100m T38 final and also competed well in the Discus and Shot Putt.

Closely followed this weekend by the Northern Championships where all the Gateshead athletes excelled in very challenging windy conditions: GOLD MEDAL for Hannah Buckton in the U13 girls 100m, Ines Curran in the U17 Women 3k, and for Jack Halpin in the U17 Men Shot Putt. SILVER MEDAL FOR Joy Eze in the U17 Women 100m, David Race in the U17 Mens 800m, and Darcy Garbutt in the U15 Girls 100m. BRONZE MEDAL for Aaron Lillistone in the U17 Men 100m Hurdles.

Other performances on the track were Dylan Love – 4th in U15 Boys 300m Final; Liam Eastaugh – 4th in the U17 Men 400m final; Matthew Lumb – 6th in both the U17 Men 100m and 200m; Megan Costello – 5th in final of U17 Women 100m; Susan Folorunso reached the semi final of the U17 Women 100m and Daisy Percival ran well in the heats and was unlucky not to progress. Mia Liddell placed 6th in the U17 Women 300m Hurdles; Ethan McGlen – 6th in the U17 Men 1500m.

On the field – Philippa Ellis and Daisy Percival competed in the Long Jump where Philippa picked up an injury causing her to pull out of the hurdles race the next day. Cameron Marshall was 7th in the U15 Boys Javelin, Vinny Baker – 5th in the U15 Boys Shot Putt; Lucy Giles – 5th in the U17 Women Shot Putt; Lexie Ellis – 4th in the U15 Girls Shot Putt and Orla Carty – 4th in the U17 Women Javelin. A good day for the Gateshead throws squad.

Unless your social media has crashed you can’t have failed to notice that the club had 6 relay squads at the Birmingham Diamond League Club Connect Relays. The U13 girls squad of Cele Nelson, Amelia Sherlock; Madelaine Liddell and Martha Chapple were 4th in their final and the U15 boys squad of Joshua Hickson; Beni Ayuk; Finlay Wilkinson; Ulrich Lawson and Freulain Mason were unfortunate with a mix up on the first changeover so didn’t finish. The U20 Women ran well with 3 hurdlers and a high jumper in the squad so well done to Lucy Hickson, Gemma Smith, Mia Liddell and Charlotte Haddon who completed the race despite a tight hamstring.

We had a mad 20 minutes where the U17 Girls, the U27 Men and the U20 Men relay squads broke club records with a win for Susan Folorunso; Megan Costello; Daisy Percival and Joy Eze in the U17 Women. A win for Matthew Lawson; Josh McKeown; Lewis Cant and Daniel Lennie in the U17 Men and a great race for 2nd in the U20 Men’s race with Kyle Walton; Josh Errington; Joe Halpin; Greg Abibu Bukasa and Oliver Lewis in the squad.

While the athletes listed above competed or were reserves on the day, we mustn’t forget the athletes who competed in the relay squads over the course of the season where they ran for qualification. Many of these athletes were at the Northern Champs so well done to them and thank you to all the volunteers and team managers who have supported these teams this year, especially Phil Gardiner and Karen Storey who gave up their time to coach them in baton changeovers.
