Several of our young athletes competed in the National Cross Country Championships.  The weather stayed fair during the day but the rain had left the parts of the circuit resembling an assault course.

In the under 13 girls, Aoife Bell had our highest place of the day in an excellent 43rd position, the 3rd north east runner. Unfortunately we didn’t finish a team, but Annabel Milburn was 82nd despite a fall and Marina Swift had another encouraging run in 196th.

The under 13 boys were the first north east team home in  23rd place.  Theo Dragoi was first north east finisher in 75th and Matthew Das had a strong run in 113th . They were followed in by Sam Emery, running only his second under 13 race, and Sonny Lewins to complete the team.

Our sole under 15 competitor was Cassius Dornan.  Completely new to this level of competition, and in his first year in this age group, he was 281st after a cautious start.

We were well represented in the under 15 Girls. Jessica Milburn was first finisher in 77th, the 5th north east runner to finish.  She was backed up by Anya Crowder, Freja Bell and Lucy Oliver so that the team finished 35th. Unfortunately, Jessica Ord had to withdraw after falling heavily and twisting her ankle.

In the under 17 Men, David Race followed his fine run at the Signals Relays with another good performance in 61st .   David was the 5th north east runner to finish.

Well done to everybody who competed, the experience of racing at this level in such big fields will benefit them in the future. Thanks to the parents and assistant team manager for the day, Oliver Ezeoke, for helping with the tent and organizing the athletes, and to those who managed to arrive just in time despite the traffic congestion.

Thanks also to the organizers, race officials and marshals for ensuring that the championships took place despite the difficulties caused by the weather.
