It was the Masters North East X-country Championship on Saturday 1st February held at East Cramlington Nature Reserve, the wind was extremely strong in places which made it difficult at times for the runners.

The first race was for Ladies which included all the age groups, with the Gateshead Ladies competing successfully, Gillian Manford finished 2nd (Silver Medal) overall in the race which also meant she was 2nd in her age category, and with Kim Simpson and Team Manager Lisa Atkinson battling through the field it meant that they won Team Gold Medals, a great effort. Within the same race, the club had other successes in other age groups with Freda Summerfield finishing 3rd, (Bronze Medal) Jane Giles 2nd (Silver Medal) and the consistent performances of Maggie Loraine gained her 2nd position, (Silver Medal) all in their age groups. Elizabeth Medd continued her preparation for her first marathon later in the year by turning out and helped support our teams.

The Men’s Championship was the second race to be run with the same format as the Ladies ie all age groups starting off together, and again the club had the 2nd overall individual to finish in the ever consistent Conrad Franks, (Silver Medal) and with men’s Captain Steven Medd who picked up 3rd place (Bronze medal) in his age group and then Peter Grimoldby both packing well, the Team came away with the (Bronze Medals), so a good all round day of success, individually and team.

So we look forward now to the North East Road Relay Championships (Signals Relay) on Saturday 15th February hoping for further positive results.
