The above Championships took place at Aykley Heads (Durham) on a pleasant winters day, but with the course being quite Hilly and with the recent rain it made the conditions quite challenging for all who took part, with the club being represented in all 12 Races in the various age groups for Female & Male athletes.

The U/11s Races were first on the programme with the Boys toeing the line, and the club getting off to a great start with Noah Curran finishing in 2nd position which was a tremendous effort, there was no Team race in this age group but he was supported well by Luca Shaw, Oliver Ozeoke and Ben Galvin.
This was followed by the U/11 Girls where Anya Crowder powered on to come home in 1st place, great running and she was well backed up by Phillipa Ramsey and Lucy Waterfield, again there were no Team awards.

Innes Curran made it a family double along with (Noah’s 2nd place) Innes in the U/13 Girls finished 3rd, taking the Bronze Medal and only narrowly missed out on 2nd place, but a great battling performance.

The U/13 Boys continued the success with David Race and Ethan McGlen fighting it out all through the race with David just edging it, finishing 2nd and Ethan 3rd and with Jack Garrett backing the lads up, the Team came away with Silver medals as well, well done to them.

With the programme being so full the Races were coming thick and fast and the U/15 Girls were next to race with the conditions under foot worsening after each race, Chloe Wellings really worked hard throughout to finish a very creditable 9th position. The Team finished 7th overall with Amy Baker and Jasmine Crang being the other counters.

Charlie McMillan was our only Boy in the U/15 Championship, but he has steadily improved throughout the season and ran extremely well to finish in 9th position, I’m sure there is a lot more to come from Charlie.

In the next race the U/17 & U/20 Women ran in the same Race and they were Gold Medal Team winners, which was a fantastic achievement, the team was led by Olivia Bateman who was representing the club for the first time and she came away with the individual Bronze Medal, and with Isobel Chaudrey in 7th and Elisha Tate in 13th they were comfortable winners.

The U/17 Men had the worst of the under foot conditions being the last race of the day, they just missed out on the team medals by 2 points. The Team was lead by Alex Armstrong in 6th position who has worked hard throughout the season and is starting to reap the rewards, as is James Morris who finished a very creditable 12th place with the 3rd counter Alex Haddon bringing the overall team in 4th position.

Our Junior Men (U/20) were another team just missing out on medals in 4th position, with James Cripwell finishing in 7th position, and a special mention to Ewan Waite who worked his way through to 17th place and with Joe Kirk closing the team out.

The Senior Women also just missed out on medals by again finishing in 4th position, they were led by Mary Ferrier who in a very competitive field worked really hard to finish 5th position, the other 3 counters in the team Gillian Manford, Sarah Hill and Sophie Wickham had there own private battles in the race and packed well.

Our Senior Men’s team slightly depleted on the day, but all credit must go to the lads that ran on the day bringing the Team home in 6th position, thanks to Conrad Franks, Simeon Greenwood, Kevin Connelly, Steven Medd, Chris. Hainsworth and Phil McKeown, running 3 large laps making 12k.

So a reasonably successful day for the club overall, and well done to all that took part, but still we need to encourage more athletes to compete, after all that’s what we train for.

Would like to thank all the Coaches and Parents who came along to support our athletes in this the first of the seasons Championships.
