The club was well represented in the Durham and Northumberland teams competing in the Northern Inter Counties Schools Championships which were held on a scenic but tough course on the Lowther Estate on 8 February. With English Schools places at stake, the races were highly competitive.
Top finisher was the Northumberland team captain, Chloe Wellings, who bravely front ran the Senior Girls race, only to be hauled in by Chloe Rylance of Cumbria in the closing stages. In the same race, Amy Baker ran well to finish 12th and 2nd counter for Durham.
In another exciting finish, Ethan McGlen was an excellent 3rd in the Intermediate Boys. David Race was 4th Durham counter in 16th place. Well done also to Theo Barron, who, in his first race for several months was 33rd and 9th counter for Durham, and Jack Garrett in 77th position.
In the intermediate Girls Rosie Hughes was 28th and 6th counter for Northumberland.. Jessica Ord had a strong run to finish 41st.
Theo Dragoi lost places in the final stages of the Junior Boys but held to finish 17th, and 8th counter for Northumberland. Robbie Garrett was 65th and Cassius Dornan 71st.
In the Junior Girls. Jessica Milburn was 8th and Annabel Milburn 13th to ensure English Schools selection. Anya Crowder just missed out as 9th counter for Durham in 26th. Aoife Bell was 51st, Millie Watson, 52nd, Marina Swift, 57th, and Lucy Oliver, 77th .
Our only runner in the minors age groups was Elle Sperring. After a cautious start, she made her way up to 40th place.
Overall it was another encouraging day and more good experience for the club’s young athletes, well done to everybody who competed. The club should have several runners picked for the English Schools with some who had to miss this fixture to be considered as well.
