National 12 Stage Road Relay Champs

Our Senior Men traveled to Birmingham(Sutton Coldfield – 6th April) to compete in the above British & English 12 Stage Road Relay Championships, the format of the race being 6 long legs (5.3 mile) & 6 short legs (3.1 mile) ran alternatively, all the teams had to qualify via their Regional Championships.

On a tough yet fast course with good weather, Gus Withers toed the line with around 70 other clubs on the first leg (5.3 mile), this being his first major championship he got the team off to a really good solid start and handled the situation well, he passed onto second leg runner James Cripwell (3.1 mile) who moved the team into the top 30 places. Through the next 3 or so hours the Team battled through each leg and consolidated, moving between the top 30/40 places, eventually finishing in 40th position, which was 2nd North East team and 10th Northern team (we finished 13th in the Northern 12 Stage) so a very satisfactory performance.

The remainder of the Team and in running order were Matt Linsley, Conrad Franks, Steven Asquith, David Wakefield, Ross Christie, Dan Alexander, Kevin Connolly, Paul Waller, Jonny Malley and Peter Grimoldby. There was a great Team spirit created by the lads throughout the whole day which can only auger well for the future.
