It was back onto the roads after the mud of Mansfield for our Senior/Junior athletes, when they turned out in force in the annual Memorial Races around the paths of the Newcastle Town Moor.
The 2 minutes silence at 11-00am before the start of the 10k race was as always impeccable.
It was a large field that set off and once the race settled down Conrad Franks and Gus Withers were comfortably placed in the leading pack of around 8/10runners. As the race progressed this group wittled down to 4/5 runners with the Gateshead lads still being part of the front group. Over the final 2k Conrad & Gus were battling for 2nd and 3rd positions and held onto those places, as they crossed the finish line, Conrad also finishing 1st Vet O/35 age group.
Charlie McMillan (1st year U20) was working his way through the field to finish a very creditable 8th position (running a PB 32mins-15sec). With 4 counters needed for the Team race Steven Medd as always, battled through the field to finsh in 19th position (2nd Vet O/40), Steven being closely followed by Dan Alexander and the Senior Men coming away with 1st team prize and Trophy.
The Ladies were also represented with Gillian Manford running a massive PB for 10k with a time of 37mins-30sec to finsh 3rd in the overall race but 1st in the Vet O/35 catorgory, Gillian was backed up by Liz Porteous and Freda Summerfield. Also congratulations to Angela Kirtley for her 2nd place in the Vet55 section. A special mention must be made to Elizabeth Medd who ran her first race after having her baby and is now building towards a London Marathon debut. (look out Steven)
Finally, I’m sure we wish Conrad Franks well as he represents England in the British & Irish International X-country Champ, running in the O/35 age group at Aintree Race-course, on saturday 16th November.
