Our young athletes made a bright start to 2020, running in The Sherman Cup and Davison Shield fixture, which was held in fine conditions at Temple Park.
The under 11 Boys started the programme with a strong showing. Alex Lienard won, closely followed by Harry Hunter in 2nd and Harry Garrett in 4th. Matthew Waters was 7th and Sam Emery 9th and they were followed by Patrick Moran, Ben Forster and Connor Barrett.
Lyla Fenn was the first finisher in the under 11 Girls in 16th position. Maeve Taggart and Skye Marshall came in next followed by Alice Maguire and Safiyah Ishaq, both new to these races.
Theo Dragoi was 2nd, Matthew Das 4th and William Wells 11th to set up another winning team result for the under 13 Boys. Sonny Lewins, James Schweitzer and Samson Oliver completed a fine showing in this age group.
Annabel Milburn was an excellent 3rd in the under 13 Girls. Marina Swift and Elle Sperring, supported by Jessica Barrett and Jessie Dornan, had strong runs to take the team into 5th position.
Luca Shaw also ran well to finish 19th in the under 15 Boys. He, Cassius Dornan and Oliver Ezeoke, all first year in the age group, finished 8th in the team race.
Jessica Milburn had another encouraging run, finishing 6th in the under 15 Girls. With Jessica Ord returning after illness and Lucy Oliver having her strongest run for some time, the girls finished 5th.
Charlie Daley continues to improve finishing 3rd in the under 17 Men. David Race was 5th and, backed up by Jack Garrett, the team were 3rd.
Well done to all the young athletes who competed and made a big contribution to the club’s overall showing in winning the Davison Shield and being runners up in Sherman Cup. Thanks to everyone who supported the runners and helped with the tent. Thanks also to the host club, South Shields Harriers, and the race officials and marshalls.
