Well, they talk about Super Saturday, this was “Wonderful Weekend” as far as Gateshead Harriers Endurance athletes were concerned. It was the London Marathon weekend and the club had 9 athletes running in the Marathon, some for the first time, credit and well done to all, those taking part were, Anji Andrews, Charlotte Perkins, Philipa Pattison, Maggie Loraine, Paul Andrews, Ian Logan, David Wakefield, Paul Waller & Dan Alexander, with Maggie Loraine continuing her terrific form and finishing 4th in her age group category and clocking a 3hr-31mins-49sec. Dan Alexander had the run of the day (with regards to the Marathon) when he finished in a fantastic 38th position in a time of 2hrs-26mins-48sec, with a display of consistent/controlled paced running, this being his first venture into the marathon distance, I’m sure he has more to offer as he develops even more over the coming years. As well as the Marathon taking place there were also races for Young Athletes which were classed as the British Athletics Road Championships and the club had athletes representing the North East (Ethan McGlen U15, Ines Curran U15, Chloe Wellings U17 & Charlie McMillan U17) running in their age groups. With this being a British Championship the competition was fierce, Ines Curran ran a brave and competitive race as always and she finished in a very creditable 10th position, leading the North East who finished 5th Team. Chloe Wellings has shown some tremendous form of late and she continued in this vane at London finishing in 19th position also first counter for the North East. Ethan McGlen bounced back to top form with a fabulous run to finish 2nd in the British Championship, together with winning the Regional title along with leading the North East team to joint winners. Charlie has just recovered from a serious cut on his leg and he found it difficult but competed, I’m sure it was a great experience, but he would be disapointed as he was in great form before the accident. Meanwhile back in the North East the annual Wallsend Terry O’Gara 5k Road Race was being held, and this was totally dominated by Gateshead Harriers, with the club having 1st, 2nd & 3rd finishers with Matt Linsley taking the honours from Gus Withers and then Conrad Franks, really great to see. So a very successful and promising weekend for our Endurance Athletes to bring the Road & X-country season to more or less an end, encouraging, but work in progress.
