Our young athletes were well represented in the North Eastern Counties teams which competed in the Inter Counties Championships at Loughborough on 7 March.

Top finish of the day came from Ethan McGlen who was 21st in the under 17 Men and second team counter. After a fast start, Charlie Daley faded in the final stages but still finished 53rd. Running as an individual, David Race was 67th.  All three runners are in their first year in this age group.

Also running against older competitors, Ines Curran led her under 17 Women’s team in 44th position and Jessica Milburn did well to manage a top 100 finish in the 15 Girls.

This standard of competition, and the pen starts, were a new experience for the under 13s.  In the boys race, Theo Dragoi was 95th and second counter while third counter was Matthew Das in 132nd.  In the girls race, Annabel Milburn was outside the team scorers but still managed to finish147th.

Well done to all the runners for a creditable showing in the toughest fixture of the season so far and for coping with the treacherous conditions.

On Sunday 8 March, at Birtley AC’s cross country relays for young athletes, our team of Skye Marshall, Alice Maguire and Maeve Taggart was 8th in the under 11 Girls.  A young under 13 Boys team of Sam Emery, Matthew Waters and Patrick Moran combined well to finish 7th in the under 13 Boys.    A communication mix up led to an incomplete team being fielded in the under 15/17 Men but Will Seager Rooke and Oliver Ezeoke took the opportunity to race, following periods of enforced absence for both.

Well done again to the athletes and thanks to Birtley AC and officials for organising another successful event.
