The first of the seasons Harrier League fixtures took place on Saturday 29th September at Wrekenton. It was a fine but very windy day and with the spell of dry weather recently the ground was very hard and a lot of the runners opted to ware their flats rather ran spikes which proved to be the right decision on the day.
The size of the fields are increasing every year and Wrekenton continued in that trend with Senior Ladies recording 450 finishers, the Gateshead Harriers Ladies were out in force as usual and with the competition within the Team race being very competitive, the Gateshead Team finished in 5th position which is a solid start to the season. The counters for the Team were Jackie Philips, Elizabeth O’Connor, Julie Richardson and Lucie Wilkinson, with Jane Giles, pushing through the field and backing those 4 Ladies up, along with Liz Raven, Lisa Atkinson, Leanne Wellings, Roseanne Jones, and Susan Raven, so well done Ladies a good solid start to the 2018/19 League season, role onto Druridge Bay.
If the Ladies field was big the Mens was even larger with almost 600 finishers from the 3 packs which set off, as like the woman the competition in the Men’s for the Team positions is very fierce and the Gateshead Men also finished a very creditable 5th Team. Dan Alexander and Jonny Malley had a tremendous battle throughout the Race with Dan finishing 4th and Jonny 5th, this got the team off to a great start. With Conrad Franks working his way through the field, and having one of the fastest times overall on the day, next to count for the Team, and with stalwarts Ross Christie, Kevin Connolly and Steven Medd making up the 6 counters on the day.
These League runs are ideal as prep. races to gain fitness, plus it is helping the club to maintain its 1st Division status, there is another League run on Sunday 7th October at Druridge Bay, it could be used as your Sunday run, so lets see another good turnout, to consolidate our solid starts in both the Woman & Men’s competitions.
